It's a funny sort of story; I mean, on the surface it's pretty obvious: I'm an artist, so I illustrate myself. At my high school graduation we got the chance to have a little something read as we crossed the stage. Mine said "the illustrious Jai", but the teacher reading it out read it wrong, and read "the illustrated Jai" instead.
Describe yourself in three words.
Excitable, talkative, activist.
Are you left or right handed?
I am in the majority - right handed. I always wanted to try to become ambidextrous, but I never really had the time to devote to it.
What was your first deviation?
hoooboy, it was a stupid plushie drawing...
man, I was trying so hard to be a nerd and a geek and to fit in with the counter culture crowd...
What is your favourite type of art to create?
Probably the Art Nouveau style LARP portraits I've been doing lately; I love being able to layer on meaning through flower language and visual metaphor, so that the client gets something that's so much more than just a portrait.
If you could instantly master a different art style, what would it be?
Probably photorealism, just because it'd make it easier to be able to see the mistakes in my other work easier. Or possibly animation? I've always wanted to be able to get good at that quickly...
What was your first favourite?
This apparently; although I don't remember it...
What type of art do you tend to favourite the most?
For a long time it was fanart of things I was into at the time, but lately it's been just whatever catches my eye - I love original characters with a lot of thought put into them, especially.
Who is your all-time favourite deviant artist?
Probably humon ? Just for long term respect for their work, and how long I've been keeping an eye on them. Pani-Jeziora is also a current favourite, as is PhoenixShaman, Lucid-Moon and RuBecSo .
If you could meet anyone on DeviantArt in person, who would it be?
I'd love to have coffee with Humon, it seems like she'd have a lot of fun stories to tell. Or Pani, just because she's such a lovely person online, I can only imagine she's lovely IRL.
How has a fellow deviant impacted your life?
A ton of my good friends IRL have been huge supporters on dA as well as in the rest of my life; they've encouraged me to go further and work harder. Also, all the folks over at OC-Art-Exchange who've traded with me have been incredible influences in stretching my wings for style and content. Bascially, every interaction I've had on here has been hugely important to my growth as an artist.
What are your preferred tools to create art?
Right now I'm loving my watercolours - I have a Windsor & Newton pocket set - and my fine pens. My other mainstay is my Intuous 4; I've got the small size one, so it's easy to just pack up and take with me whereever I go, so I can work on my digital art anytime and place. I'm super in love with Autodesk Sketchbook Pro as a program; after I stopped being able to afford Photoshop, I found Sketchbook, and it has solved literally every problem I ever had with Photoshop.
What is the most inspirational place for you to create art?
I don't really have inspirational places - I tend to be focused inward when I'm working. I suppose, you could say the LARP fields are my inspirational places, because even though I don't create there, that's where most of the characters and situations I draw come from.
What is your favourite DeviantArt memory?
That's a hard one... Hm.
Probably the first few favourites I started getting that weren't from my IRL friends; it made me feel so good that people who didn't know me (and thus weren't required to like my art by social contract) thought my art was good enough to save to look at later. Everytime I get a favourite, even twelve years after I first joined this site, I just get this warm feeling right down to my toes that makes me feel like I'm actually accomplishing something.
